Craig began boxing at the age of 9 back in his hometown of Barnsley and continued boxing at Lowestoft ABC into his youth. having approaching 30 contests and representing England on more than one occasion.
Craig had three professional fights before circumstances led to a three year hiatus in which time he didn’t set foot in a gym at all. Ultimate Boxing Academy head coach Matt Smith knew Craig from his own days at Lowestoft ABC and when the first Ultimate Boxing gym was opened on Lowestoft High Street it wasn’t long before Craig came through the door asking for a meeting regarding re-starting his career.
With management guidance from Graham Everett, Matt trained Craig for the following eight years and during that time Craig boxed for the Southern Area title, English title and WBO European title. The highlight of Craig’s professional career was his 10th round KO win vs the highly regarded Boy Jones Jnr for the Southern Area title which won Boxing News’ fight of the month and BoxNation punch of the month along with the belt. The plaudits from many a top level boxer on social media after this bout were quite overwhelming. This win made local history as Craig became the first professional boxing champion from Lowestoft.
Craig runs his own roofing company C Poxton Roofing. An unfortunate accident at work resulting in an eye injury put an end to his boxing career as a fighter but he is now a valuable part of our coaching team having passed his England Boxing Level 1 coaching qualification. He now enjoys passing on his experience and motivation to the next generation of amateur boxers, some of whom may one day find themselves under the lights, boxing live on TV as a championship level professional boxer too.
